Time: 7 p.m.

Location: The Amphitheater of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade

The Youth Biennial and Students in Blockade are pleased to invite you to a special educational program that opens an important dialogue about institutional structures through the lens of art and social engagement. The program will be held live at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, creating a space for critical reflection and support for current student efforts toward systemic change.

The starting position of this lecture is taken from the 1999 book by American analytical philosopher Noel Carroll, titled "Philosophy of Art: A Contemporary Introduction". In this book, the institutional theory of art is established as one of six types of general theories, which more or less encompass all other, more particular ones, and are compared to each other. These include, besides institutional theory, theories of art as representation, expression, form creation, and provision of aesthetic experience. After introducing the typology of art theories, along with examples of typical artworks that embody them and arguments for and against their application to current artistic production, institutional theory of art will be confronted with the artistic practice called 'institutional critique'. Artist and art theorist Andrea Fraser defined this as a type of art that operates through "critically reflexive site-specificity of work," and provided its genealogy throughout the twentieth century, from historical avant-gardes to neo and post-avant-gardes, as well as an explanation of their institutionalization processes. Then, it will be shown how the beginning of this century saw the development of practices of reflexive reformatting of critically oriented art institutions, mainly in the west and north of the European continent, which Nina Montmann, who was herself a protagonist of this process, called "new institutionalism". Namely, through processes of self-criticism during the development of 'new institutionalism', initiated mainly by formerly independent curators who became directors of relevant museums, institutional profiles began to change, so that museums strived to include in their structure some kind of "active space" that is partly a "social center", partly a laboratory, and partly an academy, where works are not exhibited but rather curatorial and artistic experiments are performed.
