Kritikujući ideju depolitizacije, neutralnosti i univerzalnosti umetnosti koju ovaj koncept nosi, Jelena Savić će pristupiti temi koristеći teoriju beline i ideju otuđujuće i zastrašujuće "vrišteće bele pozadine".

Educational Program of the Youth Biennial

Lecture Topic: WHITENESS IN THE SPACE OF CULTURE

Lecturer: Jelena Savić

Date: Saturday, November 16, 2024
Time: 2 p.m.
Format: Online (link for the video of the talk: youtu.be)

We invite you to Jelena Savić's lecture, which will deal with the issue of whiteness in the institutional spaces of culture through the prism of critical Roma theory!

The lecture will provide a historical view of the representational form of the "white cube", which was created at the end of the 20th century in Europe under the paradigm of modernity. Criticizing the idea of depoliticization, neutrality and universality of art that this concept carries, Jelena Savić will approach the topic using the theory of whiteness and the idea of an alienating and frightening "screaming white background". In a normative artistic context, this approach will point to the problem of hypervisibility and dominance over racialized subjects.

As a case study, Jelena Savić will use her personal experience with curatorial practices during her participation in this year's October Salon. The lecture will try to reconsider the possibilities of understanding and practice of decolonization of artistic spaces.

About the Lecturer:

JELENA SAVIĆ is a Romani activist-artist born in Belgrade. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in digital humanities at the Centre for Gender Research at Uppsala University in Sweden. She holds a master's degree in philosophy from the Central European University in Budapest, as well as a bachelor's degree in andragogy from the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade.

Her artistic work encompasses poetry, performance, digital illustration, and comics, and is influenced by feminist and critical theory, world-systems theory of coloniality/modernity, Afro-pessimism, whiteness studies, and critical race theory. Through her work, she interrogates dominant Gadjo (non-Romani) supremacy and the canonical representations of Romani subjectivity.

This year, Jelena Savić is participating in the October Salon with a collection of works titled "gPSY: I am not your Negro" and a performance called "Being your Negro". She has also performed "My Name is Optimus Prime" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb. She is the author of the visual identity for the exhibition "Unveiling Memories" at the Kai Dikhas Foundation in Berlin, where she also performed "Double Nobodies". Her comics and visual solutions have been featured in the exhibition "Consent Not to Be an Individual Entity" at Hammarkullen Konsthall in Gothenburg.

Jelena Savić's poetry has been published in the Packingtown Review in 2023, as well as in the anthology "Cat Painters: An Anthology of Contemporary Serbian Poetry" (2016). Her early poetry collection, "Explosive Crumbs" (2004), was published by Matica srpska. She also shares her poetry on the web platform www.usernamekaspoetry.wordpress.com
