O umetniku

The place of transformation: place where it all begins – artists returning to the place of their cooperative space in costumes made from collected waste. (Courtesy of Eddy Ekete)
Youth Biennial and the curatorial segment Oases (Tane_Tanja Laketić and Dušan Ivić), on behalf of the Association of Fine Artists of Serbia (ULUS), in collaboration with PhD in One Night and Orangeries de Bierbais (Belgium), invite all interested individuals to join a collective action of gathering waste materials for a five-day workshop with artist Eddy Ekete from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, during which a unique costume of this kind will be created for the first time in this part of the world. Ekete is widely known for making costumes from various types of waste, as documented in the following link.
You can find the application form to participate in the workshop here.
Materials needed for costume making include:
A) Plastic bottles with caps
B) Cardboard and cellophane packaging (chips, chocolate, tea, etc.)
C) Plastic bags (colored or not, transparent or not)
Waste materials can be delivered to the Art Pavilion “Cvijeta Zuzorić”, located at Mali Kalemegdan 1, Tuesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 19:00 (closed on Mondays).
The workshop will take place on September 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29 in front of ULUS Gallery, Knez Mihailova 37.
The final performance — a public presentation of the costume in a city walk by Eddy Ekete, followed by a conversation with him and the entire team within discussion "Art as a Temporary Free Territory"(Belgium/Serbia) — is scheduled for September 30 at 7 PM at Cvijeta Zuzorić Art Pavilion.
About the artist
Eddy Ekete is a visual artist and the initiator of several collectives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Europe, among which the international gathering KinAct (Kinshasa, 2015) and the artistic space/cooperative Ndaku Ya La Vie Est Belle (Kinshasa, 2018) stand out.
His artistic work engages with urban environments through anthropological and decolonial observations, creating works that serve as an active response to the world around us. His practice deals with a new form of restitution — returning the waste Europe sends to Africa back to Europe in the form of artistic, alchemized creations.
He was one of the representatives of the first Pavilion of the Democratic Republic of the Congo at the Venice Biennale in 2024.
