Glenn De Cock

Inspired by ergodic literature and virtual story telling I create story’s and characters in worlds you can explore with the help of digital and physical media.

My way of working is a conjunction between text and the digital realm, enhanced with classical created pieces  such as paintings, drawings etcetera.

Cymetona

Cymetona is a video game and cybertext installation. The work is a way of traversing text and story like a dérive. In a time where we look more and more to screens and are surrounded by an algorithmic space that we can enter and leave at will. We should rethink the way we read and use text, instead of reading as humans we should start thinking about text as the cyborgs we already are. Traverse a (digital) text in a playful way, inspired by the medium. Look more than you read. The work consists of a video game and drawings. In the video game, you can discover the stories and ideas of the inhabitants, the story is decided by the choices the player makes while talking to the inhabitants. The texts inside the game are generated based on existing video game conversations. The drawings of these digital inhabitants are on the same material the computer runs the game from, etched print plates.

What is the language in common for the young people today?

What does the process of making one of your pieces look like?

Which challenges have you faced while making art as you know it?

I think having enough time to make things is the biggest challenge I faced up until now. And especially the time needed to learn new stuff.

Do you consider yourself an artist, and what does that word mean to you?

I have no idea if I consider myself an artist or what the word means. I don’t think it’s something I ever can answer for myself.

What is your escape from reality? Do you even have a need to escape from something?

Music and daydreaming are my most important escapes from reality.

What does the word innovative mean to you?

New ideas, objects mainly connected to something practical or technology.

Do you have a plan for the future? Where can your artistic practice take you?

Future wise I would like to learn more about creating games and music to expand my knowledge in virtual design and create new worlds like Cymetonia, which I’m showing at the youth biennal.

What made the biggest influence on you to become what you are today and do what you do now?

Music and my friends.

How would you describe Serbian (Balkan or European-depends on where you live and work) contemporary cultural scene?

I know little from the Serbian contemporary cultural scene but I am excited to discover it through the Youth Biennal.

In which way does your creative process shape you or changes you as a person, if it does at all?

My creative process is a process to illustrate my ideas/thoughts and the things I have fun working on. It shapes me as a person because I enjoy being in this creative process and I will try as much as I can to experience it.
